San Polo di Piave

Welcome to San Polo di Piave!

Hello! Are you ready to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of San Polo di Piave? This small Venetian municipality, with its 4,884 inhabitants, has a lot to offer. Come with me to discover it!

History of San Polo di Piave

The origins of San Polo date back to the Roman era, when the area benefited from the transit of the Opitergium-Tridentum road. In the 14th century, the Republic of Venice acquired control of the territory, putting an end to the temporal power of the Patriarch of Aquileia. In 1452, the country became the seat of a fiefdom assigned to Cristoforo da Tolentino, a mercenary captain who fought under the banner of the Serenissima. Over the centuries, various noble families succeeded each other in leading the municipality.

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of San Polo di Piave were granted by presidential decree in 1987. The gonfalon is a red drape.

Monuments and places of interest

The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul is the parish church of the country. The building, damaged during the First World War, was rebuilt in the first half of the twentieth century. In front of the parish church, there is the Papadopoli-Giol Castle, an imposing neo-Gothic structure with a magnificent English garden. The castle, built in the 19th century by the Papadopoli family, later passed to the Giol family, which still owns it.

In the hamlet of San Giorgio, there is a splendid church dating back to the 15th century. The interior preserves precious frescoes by Giovanni di Francia, including a suggestive Last Supper.
