San Pietro di Morubio

Welcome to San Pietro di Morubio, the Veneto Municipality

San Pietro di Morubio is an Italian municipality in the province of Verona, located in the Veneto region. The municipality has around 3,013 inhabitants and is situated 19 meters above sea level. It is composed of two urban centers, the town center and the hamlet of Bonavicina-Borgo, and many other locations, including Farfusola, Martella, and Pioppazza.

The History of San Pietro di Morubio

The town has a rich and ancient history reflected in its various districts and noble families that lived there. The area of San Pietro di Morubio was part of the Roverchiara municipality until the communal epoch when it became an independent town. The name of the locality derives from the watercourse "Fossa Sancti Petri," the Fossa di S. Pietro that flowed nearby, but there are two theories about its origin. The first theory refers to the Rubiani noble family, while the second theory derives the name from the mulberry tree (moraro) that grew in the area.

Over the centuries, San Pietro di Morubio has been governed by many noble families, including the Dal Verme, Loredan, Brolio, and Emilei, who contributed to the development of agriculture and fruit cultivation. Over time, several lands were reclaimed from marshes, and the water was channeled into streams that converged in larger ones. This led to the cultivation of rice, wheat, and various fruits.

The Economy of San Pietro di Morubio

With the advancement of technological innovations during the nineteenth century, new crops such as sugar beet and castor oil emerged. Oil mills and tobacco factories were also established to process tobacco. The pioneering entrepreneurs in these sectors were Gobetti, Pasti, Mercati, Pagliarini, Menini, Bottura, Poli-Lia, Beltrame, and others. After the unification of Italy, the town grew both in terms of construction and industry, a consequence of the strong urbanization of the time. Nevertheless, many workers emigrated temporarily or permanently abroad because it was not easy to find work in the area.
