The history of San Pietro al Tanagro

San Pietro al Tanagro is a very ancient city, founded in ancient times as a rural center. According to some historical sources, the city was founded by Saint Peter himself in the reign of Nero. However, its foundation could also be attributed to the Norman family of Altavilla, in the 12th century.

By the 13th century, the town was already one of the Casali of the State of Diano, but it was only from the 15th century that it was listed in the Angevin Registers for tax collection purposes. In 1541, the Casale of San Pietro obtained emancipation from the Casale of Diano, from which it depended. Until 1550, San Pietro al Tanagro was under the control of the Marsicano.

In 1661, near the church of Santa Maria del Piano, the convent of the Franciscan Friars Minor was completed. However, the convent was suppressed by the laws issued by Napoleon Bonaparte, with a royal decree issued by the Kingdom of Naples, Joachim Murat, dated August 7, 1809.
