San Nicola Manfredi

The Life of Manfredi

Manfredi di Hohenstaufen was a noble of Swabian origin born to Frederick II and Bianca Lancia. Raised with a love of poetry and science, he studied in Paris and Bologna. It is said that Frederick II had a particular fondness for him and Enzo of Sardinia, both born from extramarital relationships. Manfredi entered two marriages, first with Beatrice of Savoy and later with Elena Doukas. His court was itinerant and often stayed at the marcher Castle in Basilicata.

The Regency in Sicily

After the death of Frederick II, Manfredi inherited important fiefs in the Kingdom of Sicily, including the Principality of Taranto and the counties of Tricarico, Montescaglioso, and Gravina in Puglia. Frederick II also entrusted him with the Lieutenantship of the kingdom in Italy until the rightful heir, Conrad IV of Swabia, returned. The situation in the kingdom was difficult due to numerous rebellions and the support of Pope Innocent IV. Manfredi acted vigorously to re-establish Swabian dominance, but was unable to conquer Naples. He also attempted to reach an agreement with the pope, but without success.

In 1251, Conrad returned to Italy and in 1252 began to pacify the kingdom together with Manfredi.
