Origin of the name

The name San Nicandro Garganico derives from the saint of the same name, but it is not clear which San Nicandro it refers to, as the Roman martyrology knows at least three different saints with this name. However, the most likely hypothesis suggests that the first settlement was founded in a cenobitic holding called San Nicandro for the presence of some churches dedicated to the bishop saint of Myra. Subsequently, the cult of Saint Nicandro of Myra fell into disuse for several centuries, and cultic attention shifted to Saints Nicandro, Marciano, and Daria, martyrs of Venafro. Thanks to the pastoral incentive of the local Church and the "patronage" promotion of the Cattaneo feudal lords, the cult of Saint Nicandro Martyr of Venafro gradually became the patronal cult of the city.

In 1861, with the unification of Italy, the name became Sannicandro Garganico, perhaps for bureaucratic reasons.

Conclusions

In conclusion, San Nicandro Garganico is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauties. The landscape is characterized by a mix of hills, beaches, and crystal-clear waters, making it one of the most beautiful sites in Puglia. Every visit to San Nicandro Garganico can only leave an indelible memory.
