History of San Michele Salentino

The history of San Michele Salentino dates back to the 17th century when Michele Vaaz decided to create a village around an existing farm, populating it with ninety families of emigrants from Schiavonia. Initially known as "Massarianova", the village was inherited by Michele's son, Francesco, who left no heirs and the property returned to the Regia Corte. In 1839, Prince Francesco Dentice di Frasso established the urban agglomeration of San Michele Salentino in his possessions, granting land to colonists. In 1928, the town obtained autonomy from the municipality of San Vito near which it had been aggregated in the previous decades.
