Bibione
Welcome to Bibione: an island surrounded by natural beauty
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Bibione, a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, located on the Adriatic Sea. Bibione is an island surrounded by four natural wonders: the Tagliamento river to the east, the Venetian Littoral Waterway to the north, the Lagoons of the Lovi to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the south. It is truly a charming place that offers bike paths, cycle paths along the entire rural area outside to the renovated old paper mill of Villanova della Cartiera.
The history of Bibione
Bibione has a very interesting history. Initially, the lands of the island were assigned to the bishops of the nearby Diocese of Concordia-Pordenone. With the Republic of Venice, lagoon waters came under the jurisdiction of Venice, and Bibione went through centuries of abandonment. In 1866, the newborn Kingdom of Italy started a reclamation of marshy land, aimed at making the swampy and malaria-ridden water even healthier.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Consortium was established, which started impressive embankment and canalization works of the waters in the area of the Tagliamento river, works that were completed around 1930, with the recovery of over 10,000 hectares of surface. The road network was developed and Bibione was connected to the electricity and water networks. In 1956, the tourist development of Bibione began with the first hotel buildings and the development of the beach area.
Bibione becomes an important tourist destination
In 1956, the first works began to transform Bibione into a tourist area. The creation of the first hotels and shops will bring the island to become an important family tourist destination in the Tagliamento area over 50 years. With about 2,600 inhabitants, it is the most populous center in the municipality. In 1961, Bibione was mentioned in the Touring Club yearbook.
In 2006, exactly 50 years after the tourist launch of Bibione, many initiatives were presented to celebrate the occasion, including the creation of a mascot, a smiling crab. In 2007, a beach service dedicated to dogs called "Pluto's Beach" was opened, awarded by the Ministry of Tourism in 2010 as the "best beach for dogs" during the Tourists with 4 Paws competition.
