San Mauro Castelverde is a municipality located in the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily, with a population of 1380 inhabitants. The town is located on the homonymous mountain at about 1050 meters above sea level and is part of the Madonie Park. It is surrounded by the Madonie Mountains to the west, the Nebrodi Mountains to the east, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north.

Physical Geography

The territory of San Mauro Castelverde extends over 11,000 hectares and is mainly classified as a mountainous area. The lands are mainly used for farming, pastures, olive groves, oak groves, and forests. The municipality has few medium-small rivers such as the Buonanotte, Calabrò, and Pollina, but has the peculiarity of having its own beach despite its altitude. Several villages in the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains, as well as other provinces including Mount Etna, are visible from the municipality's territory.

Origins of the name

San Mauro Castelverde was already existing as a cluster of buildings, under the name of Santo Mauro, during the Norman period. The town is listed among the manors of the county of Geraci in the diocese of Messina, but it could not have taken the name of San Mauro before January 15, 584, the date of the death of Mauro (abbot).
