San Maurizio Canavese

Welcome to San Maurizio Canavese!

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about San Maurizio Canavese, a municipality in the metropolitan city of Turin in Piedmont. This city is located about 22 kilometers north of the center of Turin and is home to 10349 people.

The history of San Maurizio Canavese

San Maurizio Canavese was a much larger territory than the current municipality and included the lands delimited by the course of the Stura to the south and the entire Vauda of San Moritio to the north. At the end of the eighteenth century, the Vauda became an autonomous municipality, with the name of San Francesco al Campo.

The area was probably inhabited by the Celtic-Ligurian tribes during pre-Roman antiquity. After Roman times, some artifacts were found in the village and the place name "Stefanico" indicated the assignee of funds to be cultivated, beyond the Stura. In the first century after the year one thousand, the inhabited nucleus was indicated as "vicus de Sancto Mauritio" because the chapel of the castle was dedicated to the leader of the Theban Legion.

At the end of the thirteenth century, the village was part of the castellany of Cirié and belonged to the Marquis of Monferrato before passing definitively to the Savoy. In the fourteenth century, the Bealere of Turin were built, mills, beaters for paper and tanneries. In 1335, the marchesa Margherita of Savoy ceded to the Community the land necessary for the foundation of the new settlement, equipped with fortification and defense works capable of protecting the inhabitants from attacks and looting.

Agriculture was the main source of livelihood in past centuries and the village consisted of blocks that included civilian dwellings, sheds, stables, courts, carriage gates; ovens and wells were often co-owned. Only from the seventeenth century, when large farms were built, was it possible to practice more profitable methods in cultivation and livestock breeding, exploiting the vast extensions of land and the good possibility of irrigation. Craftsmanship and trade only occupied a low percentage of the population and hydraulic power favored the setting up of small workshops, now almost all disappeared.
