San Martino in Rio has a long and fascinating history. In 1050, the bishop Niccolò Maltraversi gave these lands to Bonifacio di Canossa, who in turn passed them on to his daughter Matilde. In 1115, Countess Matilde di Canossa enfeoffed the territory to the Roberti family, who built a castle with a moat and drawbridge. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several destructions and reconstructions, before becoming the center of an independent lordship of the Este family in the XV century.
