History
San Martino di Venezze has a very rich history. Archaeological findings show that the territory of San Martino was frequented as early as the Bronze Age and was colonized in Roman times. In 1484, San Martino was ceded by the Estensi to the Republic of Venice, to which it belonged until its fall in 1797. In 1844 and 1882, San Martino was subject to two ruinous floods of the Adige river. After its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the name "di Venezze" was added to the municipality of San Martino. The Adige flood of 1882 was followed by a migratory process towards South America which ended only in the early 1920s. In 1951, after the flood of the Polesine of November 1951, a new migratory process began towards the industrial areas and a progressive depopulation of the municipality.
