History and origins of San Martino d'Agri
San Martino d'Agri takes its name from the patron saint of the poor, whose cult spread in Europe between the 11th and 12th centuries. However, the history of the village dates back even further, as shown by archaeological finds of Roman origin that date back to the 2nd-1st century BC.
The urban layout of the village dates back to the 9th or 10th century, when some eastern monks established monasteries in this area, around which the settlement developed. The monks also founded the convent that still exists today, with wonderful frescoes in the cloister and an inestimable beautiful and valuable wooden choir.
Over the centuries, San Martino d'Agri has undergone various foreign dominations, up to the Spanish rule of the kingdom of Naples. Later, it became a fiefdom owned by the Sanseverino di Bisignano family, one of the most powerful families in the Neapolitan patriciate.
After the crisis of the feudal system at the end of the 17th century, the village passed into the hands of the Sifola, a wealthy Apulian family. During this period, the peasant population suffered many difficulties due to the speculation of the more powerful families.
