San Martino Buon Albergo
San Martino Buon Albergo: General Presentation
Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful town located in Veneto, in the province of Verona: San Martino Buon Albergo (or, as it is called in the Venetian dialect, San Martín Bon Albergo). This municipality has a population of about 15,798 inhabitants and is only 4 km away from Verona, in the district of San Michele Extra.
Physical Geography
San Martino Buon Albergo is located in the Veronese foothills and is surrounded by some hills that precede the start of the Lessinia, in the area of the hamlet of Marcellise. Furthermore, the southern part of the municipality develops completely in the plain on the edge of the "Bassa Veronese," and is washed by the Adige River. In this area, we still find large agricultural areas and areas dedicated to walking and cycling routes.
Origins of the Name
The area where San Martino Buon Albergo is located has been inhabited for at least 2,000 years, and it is believed that, already in Roman times, it was known as an important road junction. However, the name "San Martino Buon Albergo" has more recent origins. In fact, the ancient "fortified army camp" or "lodging-inn" for halting and changing horses gave rise to the name "Buon Albergo." Over time, a church dedicated to San Martino was built, and so the village took its current name.
History
Although San Martino Buon Albergo does not have an independent history from that of Verona, there are some interesting curiosities to discover about its history. For example, in 489 AD, Theodoric the Great defeated Odoacer in a battle fought right at the town's gates, in the countryside between San Martino Buon Albergo and San Michele. However, it was from 1146 onwards that the village began to become a "territorial entity" in its own right, thanks to the donation of some land made by the deans of Lavagno to the village's small church, subject to the Abbey of San Zeno.
I hope this brief historical excursion has been useful in getting to know San Martino Buon Albergo better. If you have the opportunity, I recommend visiting it and admiring its beauty: I assure you that you will not regret it!
