According to tradition, San Marco la Catola was founded in 1228 by some survivors of the Sixth Crusade, who were taken captive in the Holy Land and freed by Frederick II of Swabia. Over the centuries, the town was under the control of various noble families, including the Gaetani d'Aragona and the Pignatelli. In the 19th century, banditry affected the area, but today the town is a peaceful community of hardworking and welcoming people.
