History and origin of the name

The history of San Marco Evangelista has ancient and interesting origins. In the past, the territory was occupied by scattered rural homes and hunting cottages that belonged to local and Neapolitan noble families. Over time, the settlement of "Massarie" developed during the eighteenth century. The Massarie nucleus was divided into two parts called "Massarie di San Marco" and "Massarie delli Perroni". In 1762, these two nuclei were united under the name of "Casale delle Masserie". However, the current name of "San Marco Evangelista" was only given in 1863 in honor of the patron saint Marco Evangelista.
