The history of San Marco dei Cavoti

Disappeared settlements

The surrounding areas of the current urban center of San Marco were already inhabited in the pre-Roman era, with the city of "Cenna" as the fulcrum. After the destruction of this city, the inhabitants moved downstream and built a new village called "San Severo," located on a hill about 4 km from the current settlement. This village was part of the Ariano grancontea during the Norman conquest of southern Italy. Today, it's visible near the Santa Barbara church.

Archaeological findings in Calisi

In the 1980s, archaeological findings were made on the Jelardi family's property in Calisi. A cemetery with important remains was discovered, including large terracotta tombstones, cataloged and transferred to museum sites and depots in Benevento.
