Spignana: History, Nature, and Art in the Tuscan Apennines

History

The history of Spignana dates back to the distant era of Roman domination. However, the toponym probably derives from the area that lacked tree vegetation and was covered with Rubus ulmifolius, or from the cultivation of rye practiced there and therefore from the word "spiga" (ear of wheat). In the twelfth century, the village was under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Lizzano Pistoiese. There is a historical rivalry between the Panciatichi and Cancellieri families in Spignana and Lizzano Pistoiese. Over the centuries, the town has undergone various vicissitudes, including the establishment of the magistracy of the Community of the Mountain for the unitary control of the Apennine territories in 1775.

Monuments and places of interest

Inside Spignana, the church of San Lorenzo is one of the most important and valuable monuments in the country. Dating back to the twelfth-thirteenth century, it houses numerous works of art of great historical and artistic value. Don't miss the Macereti Cave, a cave at the foot of Mount Cerreto, where the waste from the processing of the serena stone extracted here by the stonemasons was accumulated.

Albert Kesselring's visit

During World War II, Spignana was the scene of some dramatic events, including the visit of general Albert Kesselring, who was driven away by the Allied forces from the Arno front. The phase of Allied occupation led to the installation of heavy artillery firing points, to defend the watershed boundary in the Italy river valley.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Spignana is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in nature and discover the history of Tuscany. Come and visit us and let yourself be conquered by the beauty of these lands!
