History

San Marcello Pistoiese has an ancient history. The first settlements around this area date back to the pre-Roman era. According to historians, the area was mainly inhabited by the Ligurians, while the Etruscans only passed through. During the Etruscan period, a settlement developed near the current San Marcello, where it seems that the Marcelli, a noble family of that time, owned vast territories. It is hypothesized that the name San Marcello derives from this family.

The Pistoiese Mountains were the site of a complex system of fortified settlements during the medieval period. Life in these areas was difficult, but after the Year 1000, the economic condition of the residents improved significantly thanks to the agricultural revolution of that period. San Marcello became the most important center of the Pistoiese Mountains, thanks to its strategic position along the Apennine routes.

San Marcello was a free commune, and later became part of the territories under Pistoia. In 1361, the first Captains of the Mountain Community were appointed, who took turns in Lizzano Pistoiese, Cutigliano, and San Marcello.

During the Middle Ages, wars between the various nearby cities were frequent. As a result, defensive towers and structures were built, of which there are still remains. In 1530, the village was the scene of war for the passage of Francesco Ferrucci, who was trying to reach Florence to liberate it from the siege of the imperialists.
