Origins

The founding of the town dates back to the 18th century when Pope Clement XIV decided to move the residents of the old town of San Lorenzo alle Grotte to a new location due to malaria and landslides. The construction of the new town was completed during the papacy of Pope Pius VI.

San Lorenzo Nuovo had the honor of hosting Pope John Paul II in 1990. On that occasion, the pontiff went to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sorbo, located a few kilometers from the town, where he celebrated a mass and met with the faithful.
