In 1915, the Great War struck the town due to its proximity to the Carso and Isonzo fronts, and much of the population was deported to the Landegg concentration camp near Pottendorf, on the outskirts of Vienna. In 1988, a twinning with Pottendorf was established to commemorate forgiveness and reconciliation. The territory of San Lorenzo Isontino also hosted the famous 63rd btg. f. arr. "Cagliari" infantry battalion, Brigade Gorizia, decorated for its courageous military exploits.
