The history of San Lorenzo del Vallo has ancient roots, but it is known that the Romans were a part of it, as the area where the town was located was a camp of the Roman army. The Normans were also part of the history of San Lorenzo del Vallo, as Robert Guiscard arrived in Calabria to administer a fiefdom conquered in that territory.

After the Norman period, the fiefdom changed hands and San Lorenzo del Vallo became a fiefdom of the Caracciolo and later the Sanseverino families. In the 18th century, the name San Lorenzo was added with the descriptor "della Valle" which in the 19th century transformed into the current descriptor "del Vallo", perhaps in reference to the castle.

Monuments and places of interest

The San Lorenzo Martire church is one of the oldest and most representative places of worship in the city. It is about 300 years old and was built around 1740. Next to the church is a stone bell tower, which houses a clock that marks the times of the community.

The Alarcon Castle and the Jentilino Tower are two other important tourist attractions of San Lorenzo del Vallo, which bring with them an important medieval history.
