The municipal territory extends over approximately 14 km² and borders the municipalities of Castelvenere, Cerreto Sannita, Cusano Mutri, Faicchio, and Guardia Sanframondi. History
San Lorenzello is a municipality with an intriguing and legendary history. According to legend, the town was founded by Filippo Lavorgna in 864. Filippo, saved from the destruction of Telesia, took refuge with his family on Mount Erbano. One day he met a gypsy who predicted that he would be the founder of a city. Shortly after, he met Rosita, a young woman in tears who was asking for help for her sick father. When he returned to the cave, Filippo found his entire family killed. He then decided to found a village with Rosita, naming it after San Lorenzo.
But legend intertwines with history, and it is said that San Lorenzello was historically founded by refugees from Telesia in the 9th century. The town was first mentioned in 1151 and since then followed the events of Cerreto Sannita. In 1483 it became the possession of the Carafa family and remained under their control until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.
