San Gregorio Matese owes its name to the namesake Benedictine church, dedicated to the cult of Pope Gregory I, which stood in this territory. Although it has disappeared, the church left an important mark in the history of the town.
History
The territory of San Gregorio Matese has been inhabited since the Samnite era, as shown by the tombs found in the locality of Santa Croce. However, the formation of the town dates back to the Middle Ages when the town belonged to the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno and later became one of the hamlets of Piedimonte Matese.
In 1742, the town requested autonomy from Piedimonte and received it six years later. From that point onwards, San Gregorio Matese became an official town with its own coat of arms and representatives at the Universitas of Piedimonte.
Over the years, San Gregorio Matese thrived on agriculture and pastoralism and suffered the effects of World War II. However, the town managed to maintain its identity and enhance its scenic and cultural heritage.
