History
The name of the village was given in honor of Pope Gregory the Great, whose mother was of Sicilian origin. The first inhabited nucleus was one of the so-called 13 "Casali di Catania". In the 17th century, San Gregorio belonged to the noble family of Massa, dukes of Paternò. In 1812, the abolition of feudalism led to the birth of the decurionato, a group of 10 men elected by the people and approved by the king. Over time, the village was under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Catania first and Aci Castello after, until 1856 when it became an autonomous municipality. With the unification of Italy in 1860, the decurionato was abolished and the current administrative system was introduced, with the exception of the fascist period during which the mayor was replaced by the Podestà (fascism).
