The history of San Godenzo

The village of San Godenzo belonged to the noble Guidi family until 1344 when it was ceded to Florence. In 1302, precisely in the city, the conference of the exiled Ghibellines was held to negotiate with the Guidi and Ubertini against Florence. San Godenzo also received a silver medal for civil merit for the courage shown during World War II. In 1944, the village was the subject of atrocious reprisals and roundups by the German troops who, in retreat towards the North, destroyed the entire settlement with shelling, mines, and fires. The population was forced to evacuate and had to find refuge in other nearby regions, suffering great hardships. San Godenzo also participated in the partisan war and with dignity and courage faced, with the return to peace, the difficult task of moral and material reconstruction of the village.
