San Giuseppe Vesuviano

The History of San Giuseppe Vesuviano

San Giuseppe Vesuviano is an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Naples in Campania, with a population of approximately 29,836 inhabitants. The area of San Giuseppe Vesuviano was originally an agricultural area belonging to the large estate of Ottajano, which today is known as Ottaviano. In the sixteenth century, many families from Ottaviano moved to the lower area near a busy intersection, with the idea of building numerous taverns and inns for travelers. This led to the creation of a small center called "alli Boccia", which later became very populated and was named "San Giuseppe" in 1675, after the construction of the church dedicated to the saint.

Over the years, the number of inhabitants increased and the area became an important commercial center. Thus, in 1893, San Giuseppe Vesuviano requested to become an autonomous municipality, separating from Ottaviano. After a year, the municipality took on its current name of San Giuseppe Vesuviano. Over the years, the city underwent several transformations and in 1906 it was almost destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius and entirely rebuilt. In 1923, the motto "Ex Flammis Orior" was added to the municipal coat of arms.

In the 1970s, San Giuseppe Vesuviano was merged urbanistically, commercially, and industrially with the capital city of Ottaviano and with Terzigno, forming a city with over 70,000 inhabitants. During this period, there was also a strong development of the textile industry, which led the municipality to become, together with Prato, the most important textile center in Italy. In recent decades, the city has seen a new wave of migration from Asian countries, particularly China and Bengal.

The Symbols of San Giuseppe Vesuviano

The coat of arms of the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano was granted by royal decree on May 11, 1913. The lily is the symbol of the patron saint, St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. The motto "Ex flammis orior" ("I rise from the flames") recalls the reconstruction of the town after the terrible eruption of Vesuvius in 1906.
