Gello

Gello: a Tuscan hamlet among mountains and rivers in the Piana di San Giuliano Terme

Gello is a hamlet of San Giuliano Terme, in the province of Pisa, located in the plain south of the city, between the banks of the Serchio and Arno rivers. The hamlet is characterized by the western slopes of Monte Serra, which enclose the area, and by the presence of numerous ditches and canals resulting from hydraulic engineering to regulate the flow of the two rivers.

The history of Gello: a small farm becomes a medieval hamlet

In the Middle Ages, the territory where Gello stands was known as "Piemonte Pisano", as testified by the diplomas of the emperors Henry VI of Swabia and Otto IV of Brunswick. The name "Gello" has Latin origins and indicated a "small farm". The hamlet was composed of two adjacent villages, Gello and Bottano, both equipped with parish churches dedicated respectively to San Giovanni (previously Santo Stefano) and San Cristoforo. In 1833, Gello had as many as 1063 inhabitants.
