San Giuliano del Sannio

Welcome to San Giuliano del Sannio!

San Giuliano del Sannio is a beautiful Italian municipality located in the Molise region, with a population of inhabitants. The town is named after the saint San Giuliano, to whom the population is particularly devoted, but curiously, he is not the patron saint of the place. The town is located in a very interesting historical and geographical position, which makes it a place of great cultural and tourist interest.

Origins of the name

There are several theories about the origins of the name San Giuliano del Sannio, but the most accepted one derives it from the name of a Roman proconsul named Accio Juliano, who owned a villa in the area. During the Lombard government, the fief was called "Castrum Juliani" and, believing that Giuliano was a saint, the name was later changed to "San Giuliano".

History

San Giuliano del Sannio has origins dating back to the Sanniti era and was initially a village connected to "Saepinum". Here was also the villa of Accio Juliano, a Roman proconsul. After the fall of the Roman government, the center became a Lombard "castrum" belonging to the gastaldato of Bojano. In the eleventh century, during the Norman domination, the castle was built, which then passed into the hands of the Angevins and the Aragonese. In 1805, an earthquake severely damaged the town and the Church of San Nicola was rebuilt in neoclassical style. In 1863, the name was changed to the current one.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the banner of San Giuliano del Sannio were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on November 11, 1985. The coat of arms features an image of the adolescent San Giuliano, holding the palm of martyrdom against a silver background. The banner is a cloth divided in half, with yellow on one side and green on the other.

Monuments and places of interest

Marchesale Palace

The Marchesale Palace, dating back to the seventeenth century, was built on top of the castle and was part of the Gastaldo di Bojano before passing to the count of Molise. The palace has a rectangular structure with two levels, with an arched portal decorated with a simple brick frame. To the right is the civic tower, which was once part of the old castle. The tower has a square plan with battlements on the top and was probably restored during the Aragonese period (fifteenth century).

Church of San Nicola

The Church of San Nicola is unique in its kind in Molise because it has a facade decorated with two twin bell towers. It is believed that the original building dates back to the twelfth century, but it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1457. The current neoclassical-style building dates back to 1805 and is made of white stone. The Baroque interior has white stuccoes and is in a single nave, with two altars in the transept.

Chapel of Sant'Antonio

The Chapel of Sant'Antonio, built in the seventeenth century, is a single nave and rests on two lateral bastions. The facade is gabled, with the decoration of the small rose window, and the bell tower is sail-shaped.
