Climate

The climate of Figline is typical of the Tuscan valleys: temperate with hot and humid summers and cold and humid winters. Rainfall is frequent, while in the summer they can be absent for one or two months. In winter, the temperature can drop below 0ºC, but snowfalls are rare.

Origins of the Name

Do you know how Figline got its name? It derives from the Latin "Figulinae," which means "pottery factory." A place where clay was worked to make terracotta pots and dishes, a true art form first attributed to the Etruscans and then to the Romans.

History

Middle Ages

The history of Figline begins to reveal itself from 1000 AD when the castle of Fegghine was founded. Over the years, the small center began to grow and became a town. In 1167 there was an attempt by Fiesole to move the bishop's seat to Figline to distance themselves from Florence, the enemy at that time.

During the thirteenth century, the bloody division between Guelphs and Ghibellines began. The majority of the inhabitants of Fegghine were Ghibelline and supported Arezzo, thus the Republic of Florence completely destroyed the castle, forcing the inhabitants to descend to the valley. Figline came under the dominion of Florence, which followed its fortunes in the following centuries.

Between 1353 and 1375, the imposing ring of walls was built to defend the city, still visible today.
