San Giovanni Incarico

Welcome to San Giovanni Incarico!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about San Giovanni Incarico, a town of just over 3000 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, in Lazio. The town is located in the southern part of the Valle del Liri and has a climate classified in zone D, with 1499 GR/G.

History

San Giovanni Incarico has ancient origins! It is said that the town was founded from the destruction of Fabrateria Nova by the Lombards during the 5th century. The inhabitants of Fabrateria Nova took refuge on the slopes of the current Colle Formale, the other name for Colle San Maurizio, which still dominates the town today. At the top of the hill stands the sanctuary of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Guard (San Giovanni Incarico), co-patron saint of the town along with St. John the Baptist.

During the Saracen invasions of the 11th century, a lookout was established at the top of the hill to warn the population of any impending threats. It was then that a statue of the Madonna was placed in the church, initially erected in honor of St. Maurice, called Madonna della Guardia because it acted as a guardian against invasions to the small town. In the 17th century, the town became part of the possessions of the Farnese family, and then passed in the 18th century under the administration of the Medici Farnese States.

During your visit to the town, don't miss the opportunity to admire the so-called "Bourbonic" fountain, erected by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon as the inscription on it attests. San Giovanni Incarico was in fact under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in the region called "Terra di Lavoro". And again, at the border with the municipality of Falvaterra, the boundary markers are still visible that marked the territory of the Papal State from that of the Kingdom of Naples.
