Discover the Province of Campobasso

Welcome to the Province of Campobasso, located in the Molise region. With its 84 municipalities and over 210,000 inhabitants, the province offers a great variety of landscapes and traditions to discover. In this article, we will take you to explore its physical geography and hydrography.

Physical Geography

The Province of Campobasso covers an area of 2909 square kilometers and includes a vast geographical area that ranges from the Sannita Apennine ridge to the Adriatic coast. In this province, you can find mountains, hills, lakes, and rivers that make it a very diverse and fascinating place.

Campobasso: a diverse and fascinating territory.

Territory

The territory is characterized by the mountains of the Sannita Apennine ridge, the hills, the lakes, and the rivers of the hinterland, and the coastal strip of the Adriatic. Each area has its own beauty and peculiarities, and is dotted with villages, towns, and cities that are worth visiting.

Hydrography

The Province of Campobasso is crossed by three important river valleys: the Trigno, the Biferno, and the Fortore. The rivers have a generally straight course, surrounded by the slopes of hills and mountains, and then widen significantly near the sea. In addition, the province includes two artificial reservoirs, Lake Guardialfiera and Lake Occhito.

Rivers

Among the most important rivers in the province, we have the Biferno, which crosses Lake Guardialfiera, the Fortore, which marks the border between Molise and Puglia, and the Trigno, which marks the border between Molise and Abruzzo. There are also the Tammaro, Saccione, Sinarca, and Sassinora rivers, which, although not very large, play a fundamental role in the hydrography of the province.

Lakes

As already mentioned, the province's only two reservoirs are of artificial origin: Lake Guardialfiera and Lake Occhito. Lake Guardialfiera, which owes its name to the dam that created it, is known for the two viaducts of the SS 647 Fondo Valle del Biferno that cross it and make it even more suggestive.

Whether you are a nature lover or looking for culture and traditions, the Province of Campobasso is the perfect place to explore. Come and discover its beauties!
