San Giovanni al Natisone is located on the eastern edge of the Friuli plain, at the foot of the first hills of the Collio. The territory is bordered to the west by the Natisone river and to the east by the Iudrio river, offering breathtaking views and the possibility of hiking for nature lovers.

A growing community

San Giovanni al Natisone has a population of 6,095 people, but we have been witnessing a constant increase over the last few years. As of December 31, 2009, it had 2,546 households, and the foreign community amounted to 730 units, almost 12% of the total. The largest foreign community is the Maghreb (Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians), which has 169 residents, followed by the community of Chinese citizens (134 residents).

The Friulian language at the center of culture

In San Giovanni al Natisone, alongside the Italian language, the population speaks the Friulian language belonging to the central-eastern Friulian. The municipality is included in the list of Italian municipalities of Friulian language for the purposes of the application of Law 482/99, Regional Law 15/96 and Regional Law 29/2007. Local tradition and culture are also well-presented in gastronomy: you can taste typical dishes such as frico, cjalzons, or the famous gubana.

Must-see villages

The municipality of San Giovanni al Natisone also includes some villages that you cannot miss. Bolzano is a small village that surrounds the place where the small village of "Modoletto" stood, destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century. Here, the annual "Saint Michael's feast" is held, the patron saint of the village. Also located in Bolzano is the house where Friulian poet Pietro Zorutti lived. Cascina Rinaldi, Dolegnano, and Medeuzza are other villages that are worth visiting, each with its own beauty and history to discover.
