San Giorgio a Liri

Discovering San Giorgio a Liri

Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about the town of San Giorgio a Liri, a small village in Lazio with only 2992 inhabitants, but rich in history and natural beauty.

Physical geography

San Giorgio a Liri is located between the Aurunci mountains and the Liri river, in the southernmost part of the province of Frosinone. Thanks to the waters of the river and other smaller streams, the area is rich in vegetation. I cannot forget to mention the presence of a small lake in the oldest part of the village, fed by a spring: its cold and crystal-clear waters are still used today by orchards without motorized pumps. On the hills, there are forests of oaks and beeches that leave you breathless.

San Giorgio a Liri: history and nature between the Aurunci and Liri.

Origins of the name

The village takes its name from the parish of San Giorgio, founded in the 9th century and then rebuilt after being destroyed by the Muslims in 846. After the Unification of Italy, it was decided to add the reference to the Liri river to avoid possible confusion with other places with the same name.

History

The origins of the village date back to the Iron Age, but it was with the foundation of the church of San Giorgio in the 9th century that the true core of the settlement was established. Over time, San Giorgio a Liri was fortified and, throughout the Middle Ages, it was under the control of Montecassino. Thanks to the fertility of the territory, the town enjoyed a thriving economy until the 15th century, with the transit of goods and people to and from the sea and from one bank of the Liri to the other, carried out with a typical ''scafa''.

With the loss of power of Montecassino, San Giorgio a Liri also experienced a decline, worsened by the wars between the French and Spaniards and by banditry. Only after a period of recovery, testified by the construction of the church of San Rocco, the town began to return to being the pulsing center of the area.

San Giorgio a Liri after the Unification of Italy

With the Unification of Italy, San Giorgio a Liri was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and was subsequently included in the province of Terra di Lavoro. In 1927, the fascist regime suppressed the province of Terra di Lavoro and San Giorgio a Liri was merged into the newly established province of Frosinone. And although it no longer belongs to Campania, the area remains linked to its traditions, language, and customs.

Conclusions

San Giorgio a Liri is a small town with a very interesting history, nestled between the Aurunci mountains and the Liri river, surrounded by lush nature. If you have the opportunity to visit this location, you won't regret it!
