Are you ready to discover the beautiful province of Macerata? This province, located in the Marche region of Italy, has a population of 303,684 and its capital is the city of Macerata. With an area of .

Let's explore the physical geography of the province

Since 2009, the province of Macerata is the largest in the Marche region, after it was enlarged due to changes in territorial and administrative boundaries of Valmarecchia from Pesaro and Urbino. It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea on the east and by the Umbria region (Perugia province) on the west. Currently, it is the only province in Marche to border with three other provinces of the same region: Province of Ancona to the north, Province of Ascoli Piceno to the southwest, and Province of Fermo to the south. Its jurisdiction also extends beyond the Umbrian-Marche Apennine watershed to Valnerina (Visso), the main "cross-over" of Marche beyond its natural geographic borders.

Its territory is mainly hilly (67.7%) and the rest is mountainous (32.3%). The province of Macerata houses three mountain communities: Potenza Esino Musone Mountain Community, Marca di Camerino Mountain Community, and Monti Azzurri Mountain Community.

The economy of Macerata

In the province of Macerata, as in the rest of the region, there are many small but highly specialized companies. One of the most significant sectors is footwear production. In 2006, the Banca della Provincia di Macerata was established, an important financial institution to support the local economy.

Infrastructure and transportation

Before the automobile era, the province of Macerata was crossed by historic roads that led to Rome, some of which were very ancient. The most important was the Via Lauretana (Umbria-Marche), which from Foligno entered, through the Altopiani di Colfiorito, in Marche to Serravalle di Chienti. From here, through the Chienti Valley, it headed towards the sanctuary of the Holy House and then to the port of Ancona.

With the arrival of trains, the Rome-Ancona railway, through the Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina pass, thwarted the ambitions of the province to see a railway artery directly connecting to the capital. However, around 1885, a line was built that separated from Albacina, shortly after Fabriano, towards Ancona. This line reaches Civitanova Marche, in connection with the other important Adriatic Railway, after crossing with strong slopes, the provincial capital of Macerata Station and other important cities in the province such as Matelica, San Severino Marche, Tolentino Station, Corridonia, and Montecosaro. Camerino was connected to this railway at Castelraimondo with the Castelraimondo-Camerino Railway which is now dismantled, replaced by a courier service.
