An ancient history
Ulignano has an ancient history, as evidenced by its archaeological findings, including an Etruscan stele dating back to the 6th century BC. The village appears in the privilege of Henry VI of Swabia of 1188 in favor of the Bishop of Volterra, Ildebrando Pannochieschi. Today it is under the dominion of the municipality of San Gimignano.
Points of interest
One of the most important points of interest in Ulignano is the Church of San Bartolomeo. This beautiful building was built in the 12th century, but was completely rebuilt in 1910, using the original materials. The church is in Neo-Romanesque style, with a stone facade, a beautiful circular rose window, and a brick bell tower. Inside the church, the wooden truss ceiling and travertine altars are a breathtaking sight. The table with the depiction of Mary on her throne, the Child, and the saints Bartholomew and Stephen is a 15th-century piece of art.
The Church of Santa Maria a Villa Castelli, dating back to the 13th century, is another wonder of the Ulignano area.
