San Giacomo Vercellese

Welcome to San Giacomo Vercellese!

Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking to you about a small town in Piedmont: San Giacomo Vercellese, or as it's called in Piedmontese dialect, "San Giaco". It's a commune with just 277 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli. Before 1964, its name was Cascine San Giacomo. But let's find out more about its history, demographics, and administration.

History

San Giacomo Vercellese has a small but interesting historical heritage. The town's coat of arms and flag were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on December 29, 1995. The coat of arms is divided into three parts: the first part features the figure of Saint James the Apostle blessing, while holding the palm of martyrdom; the second part has a red cross on a white background; and the third part has an uprooted rice plant against a green and gold background. The flag is a cloth divided in half with a red and white color scheme.

Society

Looking at the demographic evolution of the commune, it can be noted that, as a small town, the number of inhabitants has not undergone significant changes in the last century. In fact, in 1921 there were 366 inhabitants, while in 2021 there are 277. But San Giacomo Vercellese has something very unique that makes it stand out: its population is among the oldest in Italy, with an average age of 60 years old! Definitely good news for seniors and lovers of country life.

Administration

As for administration, San Giacomo Vercellese is governed by Mayor Roberto Marello, who has created a united and supportive team committed to the protection and development of the territory. The town has implemented numerous policies to improve the quality of life for its population, such as building playgrounds for children, creating tourist itineraries, and promoting local events.

Notes

If you decide to visit San Giacomo Vercellese, I recommend stopping at the local market, which takes place on the second Saturday of every month and where you can buy typical Piedmontese products such as cheese and rice. Also, don't miss the "Sagra del Riso", a festival held every September that celebrates rice, the agricultural product that characterizes this territory.
