San Giacomo Filippo

Welcome to San Giacomo Filippo!

Hello everyone! Welcome to San Giacomo Filippo, a small municipality with 371 inhabitants in the province of Sondrio, Lombardy. Our town is located in the beautiful Spluga Valley, also known as the Valley of San Giacomo. In this text, we will tell you a bit about the history and places of interest in San Giacomo Filippo.

History

Val San Giacomo originally had three districts: the inner district of Isola, the middle district of Campodolcino, and the outer district of San Giacomo. During the Restoration, the Austrian government decided to split the old municipality into three parts to weaken it, but the merger of the separate municipalities of San Bernardo, Sommarovina with Albaredo, and Gallivaggio with Lirone, Vhò, Cimaganda, and Prestone only happened in 1816. Until 1864, the new municipality was simply called "San Giacomo."

Religious Architecture

Church of San Giacomo

The parish church of San Giacomo is the oldest church in the valley, first mentioned in 1119. From 1460, it also became a baptistery. It was expanded in Baroque forms – which it still retains – in the mid-17th century.

Sanctuary of Madonna della Misericordia in Gallivaggio

In the territory of San Giacomo Filippo, there is the Sanctuary of Madonna della Misericordia in Gallivaggio, one of the most well-known Marian sanctuaries in the province. The bell tower of the sanctuary, with its 52 meters, is the tallest in the valley.

Gallivaggio Landslide

On May 29, 2018, a mass of about 5000 cubic meters of material slid onto the area near the Sanctuary of Madonna di Gallivaggio, causing numerous damages. Fortunately, measures were taken to restore the area and repair the damages.

Symbols

The municipal coat of arms of San Giacomo Filippo faithfully captures the blazon of the so-called "flag of San Giacomo," preserved in the city itself. The flag is divided into three horizontal bands, in honor of the valley districts. At the center is a panel with the effigy of San Giacomo.
