San Gervasio Bresciano
San Gervasio Bresciano: the municipality in the province of Brescia in Lombardy
Welcome to San Gervasio Bresciano, a municipality in the province of Brescia in Lombardy with a population of approximately 2,679 inhabitants. In the following sections, I will give you an overview of the origin of the municipality, its history, symbols, monuments and places of interest, society and administration.
Origin of the name
The toponym "San Gervasio Bresciano" has two possible origins. The first theory suggests that the name comes from the Milanese saints Gervasio and Protasio, martyred together with his brother Protasio. The second hypothesis instead states that the name was given in the medieval era by the Church of San Giacomo al Mella, which owned some properties in the area.
History
According to Mazza's studies, archaeological findings in the area suggest that there was a Roman settlement. Based on Tozzi's reconstruction, the 41st Roman cardo passed north of the current town center, while the 26th decumanus was nearby.
San Gervasio Bresciano began to be inhabited in the seventh century, with the formation of a court in Casacce and Baite. Most of the territory was therefore owned by the chapter of Brescia Cathedral until 1797. In the fifteenth century, the municipality was organized and in 1427 swore loyalty to the Republic of Venice.
Over the centuries, San Gervasio Bresciano was subjected to various looting and occupations by enemy armies. In 1447 it was sacked by the Visconti armies and then liberated by the Venetian armies the following year. In the sixteenth century, some merchants from San Gervasio had even opened a colony in Rome.
Symbols
The municipal coat of arms of San Gervasio Bresciano was granted with a royal decree on November 20, 1927. The flag used is also a blue cloth.
