San Genesio ed Uniti

San Genesio ed Uniti: the small Lombard town

San Genesio ed Uniti is a small town of 3,985 inhabitants located in the province of Pavia, Lombardy. It is a city located north of Pavia, between the Olona and the Vernavola canals. Its name comes from Sanctus Genexius, the patron saint of the city.

History

San Genesio ed Uniti has a long history dating back to the 12th century. The city was the site of an ancient parish of the diocese of Pavia, and since the earliest times it belonged to the Pavia territory. In 1326, the important Pavia family of the Sisti obtained a castle in San Genesio. However, with the creation of the Visconti Park, the castle was expropriated from the Sisti, who had many agricultural estates in the area. In the 18th century, San Genesio was a fiefdom of the monks of the Certosa.

In 1871, the municipalities of Comairano and Ponte Carate were added to the municipality of San Genesio, and the municipality was renamed San Genesio ed Uniti. In 1939, the neighboring municipality of Mirabello ed Uniti in Pavia was abolished and its territory was divided between the municipality of Pavia and the municipality of San Genesio ed Uniti.

Curiosity: in 1949, during some agricultural work, gold and silver coins and Late Antiquity jewelry objects were found, some of which are preserved at the Archaeological Superintendence of Milan.
