San Francesco al Campo is a small town of approximately 5000 inhabitants located in the Piedmont region, just 21 kilometers northwest of Turin.

This town is located on the Vauda plateau, whose origin dates back to the Celtic era and whose name means "forest". The northern part of the territory is part of the Vauda Oriented Nature Reserve, a protected area that offers numerous hiking trails and is surrounded by enchanting forests and landscapes.

A defining incident

Unfortunately, San Francesco al Campo is also known for a tragic event that occurred on October 8, 1996. An Antonov An-124 cargo plane was about to land at Turin-Caselle airport but, for reasons that were never fully clarified, failed to gain altitude and crashed into a farmhouse near the town. The incident resulted in the death of two crew members and the owners of the farmhouse.

A multicultural town

San Francesco al Campo has a community of approximately 150 people of foreign origin, whose contribution is highly appreciated in the local community life. The foreigners come mainly from Eastern Europe, with a small number of North Africans. The coexistence between different cultures has always been peaceful and the welcome of newcomers is always warm.

Passion for sports

San Francesco al Campo is very proud of its velodrome, one of the most important in Italy. Dedicated to a cycling enthusiast, it was inaugurated in 1996 and has a track with banked curves at 32° and a length of 400 meters. The velodrome has a federal school for cycling initiation and the passion for this sport is highly felt throughout the town.
