San Fior
Welcome to San Fior: The Venetian Town Among the Hills and the Plain
Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about San Fior, a town with 6843 inhabitants located in the province of Treviso, in the Veneto region, in Italy.
Physical Geography
Territory
San Fior has a territory divided between hills and plains. The main town San Fior di Sopra is located at the feet of the morainic hills of the Castello Roganzuolo hamlet and the Colle Umberto town, while the hamlets of San Fior di Sotto and Castello di Godego are located in the surrounding plain. The agricultural areas, which were once very vast, still constitute most of the territory; the landscape features the typical ''Palù'' formation.
Climate
The climate is characterized by cold and humid winters and hot and dry summers.
History
San Fior has an interesting history to discover. During World War I, the town became the seat of an Austro-Hungarian airfield and German troops, such as the Jasta 1 and Jasta 31. The town was also the seat of Flik 52, Flik 72J and Flik 74J.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Religious Architecture
= Archpriestal Church of San Giovanni Battista =
The church of San Fior is a sacred building of great historical and artistic importance, dating back to the 5th or 6th century and located in the area between the Codolo river and the current Marconi Square, where the Town Hall is located. The sacred building, in neo-Gothic architecture style, was designed by Vincenzo Rinaldo starting from the pre-existing building with a dome and internally features a valuable altarpiece: the ''Polyptych of San Giovanni Battista'' by Cima da Conegliano, a work composed of eight parts in a wooden chest. There are also other valuable works, including the ''Last Supper'' by an anonymous 16th-century artist, the ''Archangel Raphael and Tobias'' by an anonymous 18th-century artist, the baptistery, a marble basin dating back to 1494, the ''Crucifix'', an 18th-century work attributed to the famous sculptor Andrea Brustolon, and the ''Adoration of the Shepherds'', a canvas by Giacomo Rota, from the second half of the 16th century. The old church is still present, next to the new one, and a recent campaign to restore the ancient works of art has taken place.
= Tomb of Blessed Mastena =
In the cemetery of San Fior, adjacent to the apsidal part of the church and to the garden of the religious Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Face, founded here by Maria Pia Mastena, there is a chapel at the entrance of the cemetery where the blessed was buried along with all the sisters who operated in the congregation in San Fior. Since 2012, her remains have been placed in a case in the restored parochial church chapel.
= Church of San Bernardino =
The Church of San Bernardino is located along the Pontebbana, a few meters from the center, and is a small-sized building that was built in the 15th century by the San Fior community. The gabled facade has four openings: the portal surmounted by a small tympanum, two large rectangular windows on the sides and a small rose window in the center. The Church was restored in the 90s.
