The city is known as Sande Renàte in the local dialect, in honor of the patron saint. In 1862, the original name was supplemented with "Val di Comino" to differentiate itself from other similarly named cities. According to some sources, the city's origins may be linked to the story of Cominium, a Sannite outpost destroyed by Roman armies in 293 BCE. It also seems that the construction of the first sanctuary dedicated to the worship of Donato d'Arezzo, the city's patron saint, took place shortly after 304, the year of the martyrdom of the former Diocese of Arezzo. The Cominese territory then belonged to the Lombards, within Langobardia Minor.
