The history of San Damiano d'Asti

The history of San Damiano d'Asti dates back to 1275 when, during the conflict between the Republic of Genoa and Charles I of Anjou, the municipality of Asti conquered and destroyed the castles of Gorzano, Castelnuovo, Lavezzole, and Marcellengo in the Borbore valley, and founded a new village where the inhabitants of the destroyed villages were forced to live. The settlement was named San Damiano after a pre-existing little church dedicated to that saint. In the 14th century, San Damiano d'Asti was annexed to the Monferrato states and followed the changing events of the wars with the Visconti of Milan and the princes of Savoia-Acaia. In 1631, with the Treaty of Cherasco and the subsequent Treaty of Mirafiori Sud, San Damiano d'Asti was assigned to the House of Savoy. Since then, the history of San Damiano d'Asti coincides with that of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy.
