San Cipriano Picentino: the town in the province of Salerno
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about San Cipriano Picentino, an Italian town located in the province of Salerno, in Campania. With its 6466 inhabitants, this town has a very interesting history and a truly beautiful geographical location.
Physical geography
This area boasts a hill on the eastern slopes of Mount Monna di Salerno, and from its hamlets, Vignale, Pezzano, Filetta and Campigliano, you can admire ancient farmhouses, villages and masserie. The wonderful view of Salerno and Portocanale, and in some places even the Amalfi and Cilento coasts, makes this place unique. The vegetation, characterized by dried fruits such as hazelnuts and chestnuts, but also by olives and vines, allows for the production of quality olive oil and wine. In addition, the area has a seismic classification of zone 2, which means it has average seismicity.
History
San Cipriano has ancient origins dating back to the Middle Ages. Its origins are due to the destruction of Picentia, a Roman city, which led to the dispersion of its inhabitants in the surrounding territories. Subsequently, the various centers that were created became, in the Norman age, a county and a barony.
According to tradition, the town takes its name from Tascio Cecilio Cipriano, a highly venerated Christian saint. The first church built in his honor dates back to 1049, when it was built under Prince Guaimaro V. The church was located in a place called Venera, Vernera or Benera, which was later called San Cipriano. Over the centuries, the name of the town was influenced by trade with Carthaginian populations.
In 1460, the town was entrusted to the Baron of Santo Mango, while in 1531, it managed to break away from the Principality and become its own free University. In 1533, the "baronial palace" was even built between the current capital and the high hamlet of Vignale. From 1811 to 1860, it was the capital of the homonymous district belonging to the Salerno District of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) it was the capital of the homonymous mandate (right) belonging to the Salerno District. With the Royal Decree of October 23, 1862, by Vittorio Emanuele II, the name "Picentino" was added. Finally, in 1929, the town of Giffoni Sei Casali was annexed to San Cipriano Picentino and regained autonomy in 1944.

The coat of arms and the banner of this municipality were granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on November 27, 2009.
