San Cassiano: history, nature and Salento traditions

Take a look at the history of San Cassiano

The history of San Cassiano dates back to 1033, when the inhabitants of Muro Leccese were forced to disperse following the destruction of the city by the Saracens. A group of them found refuge in the tiny existing settlement near the Basilian crypt of Madonna della Consolazione and created San Cassiano. During the Norman period, the hamlet was annexed to the County of Lecce, and later passed to the Principality of Taranto.

In the fifteenth century, the Countess of Lecce Maria d'Enghien granted the feud of San Cassiano to her advisor Agostino Guarini. Today, the municipality of San Cassiano is part of the Union of Middle Lands and adheres to the club of Authentic Villages of Italy.

What to see in San Cassiano

If you decide to visit San Cassiano, you can't miss the Church dedicated to San Cassiano Martire of the fourth century, located in the center of the town. The church was built on the remains of an older structure dating back to the Byzantine period.

You can also take a walk in the Paduli Park, a rural area characterized by the presence of a wide variety of plants and animals typical of Salento. If you are interested in historical monuments, I recommend visiting the Tower of San Cassiano, a Norman coastal tower located a few kilometers from the town center.

San Cassiano is famous for its traditional festivals, including Carnival, the Feast of San Cassiano Martire (patron saint of the town), and the Potato Festival. During Carnival, the people of San Cassiano dress in traditional costumes and parade through the streets of the town.

The Feast of San Cassiano Martire is held every year from August 20 to 22 and includes a religious procession and a series of cultural and folk events. During the Potato Festival, which takes place in October, you can taste traditional dishes made with local potatoes.
