Physical geography
Let's start with Pieris, the district where the town hall is located, which develops on the State Road 14 of the Julian Alps and has more than 2,500 inhabitants. Not far from Pieris, we also find the district of Begliano, which overlooks the same state road and has a strong agricultural tradition. In fact, here you can find numerous cultivation fields and taste high-quality local products.
History
The territory of San Canzian d'Isonzo has a very ancient history, and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. But the Roman era is what left us the most important traces. In this period, the locality was called Aquae Gradatae and in addition to the famous Via Gemina, which connected the port of Aquileia to the Istrian peninsula, the Via Annia also passed, which led to Fiume. San Canziano still preserves numerous mosaic artifacts and the ruins of the terracotta tile factory, a testimony to the importance of the city in those times.
The saints Canzio, Canziano and Canzianilla
According to popular tradition, the saints Canzio, Canziano and Canzianilla were beheaded in the year 303 AD. The three Roman nobles had fled from Rome to escape anticrisitian persecutions. Unfortunately, they were captured in Aquileia and executed in the territory of San Canzian d'Isonzo. From their name comes the toponym of the town and the three crosses that represent their sacrifice. Even the noble Crisogono of Aquileia suffered martyrdom here, and today his sarcophagus is one of the most important testimonies of the city.
