A bit of history of San Bonifacio

The origins of San Bonifacio date back to Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds in the area. A religious altar dedicated to Mercury and a marble altar dedicated to Jupiter are among the oldest artifacts preserved in the crypt of the Villanova abbey. The territory of San Bonifacio was crossed by the Via Postumia and in 1942, on the occasion of the widening of the former SS 11, a Roman bridge was discovered in Villanova, over which a Roman road passed with its characteristic black stone blocks. The boundary between Verona and Vicenza already passed in Roman times through the locality of Locara. In the medieval period, the locality called "Torri di Confine" with its little church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel was venerated as a defender of borders.
