History of San Biagio Saracinisco

Learning about the history of a place allows us to appreciate it even more. In San Biagio Saracinisco, the past is very ancient, dating back to the Paleolithic era, with the presence of nomadic hunters looking for new territories. Subsequently, small fortified settlements were developed on the plateau called Gallo. In pre-Roman times, the town was inhabited by the Samnites, who often clashed with the Romans along the Sora-Venafro-Capua mountain road. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the territory was occupied by Barbarians, such as the Visigoths of Alaric I, the Vandals, the Heruli, the Lombards and the Saracens, North African peoples who settled in strategic places to carry out raids. The name "Saracinisco" comes precisely from the presence of the latter. After their defeat in the Battle of Garigliano (915), some bands of Saracens found refuge in these areas from where they were driven out by the locals.
