Physical geography

The territory

The province of Rovigo is located in the geographic region of Polesine, which is entirely flat. Its surface area is approximately 1,789 square kilometers and extends for about 100 kilometers from the borders with the provinces of Verona and Mantua to the Adriatic coast. The area is about 18 kilometers long in a north-south direction and has an altitude ranging from -4 to 15 meters above sea level. The territory is surrounded by the Adige and Po rivers, which delimit its borders to the north and south.

Hydrography

The province of Rovigo is crossed by three rivers: the Po, Adige, and Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante. This means that most of the fresh water in Italy flows into the sea, touching or crossing the province of Rovigo. Obviously, this has caused hydraulic problems in the past, with numerous floods that periodically hit the territory. However, the area has been reclaimed thanks to the numerous artificial canals that allow rapid discharge of rainwater.

The Po Delta, which extends along the Adriatic coast, is one of the largest wetlands in Europe and represents an ideal habitat for numerous animal and plant species. Here you will also find the Delta del Po Regional Park, the perfect place for trekking, birdwatching, boat excursions, and much more. Moreover, the province of Rovigo is famous for its sperlonghe, the characteristic dunes of fluvial origin that are found along the Adriatic coast. These dunes are made up of white and fine sand and represent an important nesting area for many species of seabirds.

The province of Rovigo boasts a rich culinary and cultural tradition. The Polesana cuisine includes numerous fish-based dishes, such as seafood risottos and eels in porchetta, but also meat-based dishes, such as boiled meat with pearà. Additionally, the Rovigo province is famous for the production of Vialone Nano IGP rice, a short and round-grain rice that is used in many culinary preparations.
