Welcome to Sampeyre, a municipality in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont, situated in the Varaita Valley and with a population of approximately 1003 inhabitants. The city stretches on both sides of the wooded slopes of the Varaita Valley, between the watershed ridges of the Po Valley and the Maira Valley. Sampeyre is a unique and fascinating place, with a very interesting territory and orography, which we will discover together.

Physical geography

Territory and orography

Sampeyre is located on both sides of the wooded slopes of the Varaita Valley, bordered to the north by the watershed ridge with the Po Valley and to the south by the hills of the Maira Valley. The border with the municipality of Casteldelfino is an almost straight line oriented north-south, which connects the summit of Lobbie to the Sampeyre pass. The right bank is characterized by steep slopes with numerous woods, while on the left bank, there are mainly pastures. The largest Pinus cembra pine forest in Europe is located on the left of the municipality and extends to the west.

Hydrography

The other present watercourses are generally short and steep, with low water flow, higher in winter and during the rainiest periods.

Classified in zone 3, i.e. subject to modest tremors.

Climate

The climate of Sampeyre is of continental type. In winter it is very cold, while in summer temperatures become high and humid.

Origin of the name

The name Sampeyre is the contraction of "San Peyre," which means Saint Peter in Occitan, a minority language also spoken in Piedmont. However, in 1940 the name of the municipality was Italianized by the fascist government into "Sampeire"; only in 1955 it returned to its original name.

History

The Sampeyre area had been inhabited since prehistoric times. During Roman history, there was a first systematic development in the region. Sampeyre was incorporated into the Duchy of Savoy and underwent various vicissitudes during the period of World Wars and the fascist era. Today, the municipality is a close-knit community of people who jealously preserve their culture and roots.
